Selfe Made Knives
Tell us about where you’re from, what you do, how it all started and why you enjoy it.
I’m from Kent, UK and I am a custom knife maker. I made myself a knife about 8 years ago and really enjoyed the process. I knew I could do better so I made another one and over the next few months I had made a small handful of knives that were all a little bit better than the last. Fast forward to the present date and I have a custom built workshop for knife making and ship to customers all over the world. I love it because I can always see ways of making improvements. I enjoy the deep concentration that it takes to make a knife, but most of all I like the relationships I build with customers. I love being able to bring their ideas to life, and to see the joy that receiving a truly custom knife can bring.
What are your aims and are there any items or products you’d love to make?
My aim is to constantly improve my knives to ensure that people receive the best quality knife that I can produce. I would love to make a slip joint folding knife. I designed one over a year ago, but have not given myself the time to actually have a go at making it. I have decided that this year will be the year to put that right.
What do you consider your greatest achievement in the work you do associated with EDC?
I love making my Goliath friction folding knives. They are an absolute monster of a blade that can be made to be EDC friendly. People don’t expect a pocket knife to look the way this one does, and it always manages to raise a smile when people see and hold them.
What is the best thing you have made and why?
This is generally the last thing that I have worked on. However at the moment I am making a set of 4 custom kitchen knives consisting of a K-tip, 5″ petty, Nakari and a pairing knife. There has been a lot of testing involved in making these and I finally think I have the whole set to a standard where I am happy.
What EDC gear is in your pockets right now?
I have a Spyderco Urban clipped to my jeans pocket, a trayvax card wallet and a trolley key that includes a bottle opener and hex heads.
What’s the favourite piece of EDC gear that you own?
Probably my mk4 PITS
What EDC item would you love to own and why?
I would love a Paul Mason gunstock slip joint. His work for me is the definition of class and as close to perfection as you can get.
A random fact about yourself that readers won’t learn anywhere else
I used to play mandolin and banjo in a folk punk band called Los Salvadores
